It was obvious he had a history of some sort of tragedy, but he refused to speak about it, instead focusing his thoughts on women — all women. Finally, I relented and admitted that he was, in fact, just a jerk who was not capable of monogamy or anything remotely close to it, but I still felt no need to judge him.

Then I remembered people would only do what they can get away with and these women allowed so much. There was just enough intrigue to keep me reading and wanting to figure out what would happen next. This book simply highlights the human emotions we all go through in day to day life; the thoughts we may have and the choices we may make.

Either way there is no hero in this story. Peter Calliet had a life most would be content with but he never learns from his past mistakes and continued to make questionable life choices. In the end he could do nothing but reap what he had sown. Apr 15, Rachel rated it really liked it. I must say at first I disliked Peter Calliet, he is everything about a man that I despise, has he not heard the saying why go out for burgers when you have steak at home?.

I have been caught by this type of man before this is probably why I felt a strong dislike to him. However, I realised that the women were just as bad as he was. By the end I actually felt sorry for him, I did start to think “oh no don’t feel sorry for him, he bought it on himself” but I am a soft touch and think with my emoti I must say at first I disliked Peter Calliet, he is everything about a man that I despise, has he not heard the saying why go out for burgers when you have steak at home?.

I have not read a book like this from a males perspective before so it made a change. It was well written and flowed at an even pace. It was an enjoyable read and I would like to read more from Adam Dickson in the future. Nov 18, Nick Dennes added it. I loved being drawn into Adam’s world and meeting some very of his very well developed and believable characters.

Most people will relate to at least aspects of these characters, although I should add not always like them all the time. However this was okay because of the nature of the relationships they had with others allowed you to understand more about them. A very interesting, and slightly uncomfortable read at times as all aspects of the characters were revealed and the plot thi Brilliant! A very interesting, and slightly uncomfortable read at times as all aspects of the characters were revealed and the plot thickened.

Fast moving novel, great characters and a super plot with depth which kept you gripped to the end. I highly recommend.

Highly recommended! The Butterfly Collector. McGavran’s stories captured the thoughts and actions and the struggels of his characters in their dealing with challenges and issues that have confronted many of us. McGavran portrays. Fred McGavran can write. These are elegant short stories, featuring lawyers, clients, doctors, and patients. McGavran has a spare, clean writing style, dark but compassionate, as in “Two Cures for a Phantom Limb. A superb collection. McGavern writes from a deep knowledge of people and an even deeper sense of wonder.

I have re-read the stories and find that each one opens my mind to a different perspective on the world, the people, the unknowns, and myself. These are easy reading but deeply stimulating. Was barely getting through some of it then hit a part in one of the stories that in essence was Republican bashing. The thoughts of the writer regarding Republicans was very clear. Should have left your personal politics out of it! This book of short stories was extremely enjoyable. Most of the stories had surprising twists and unpredictable endings; I found a few of the stories difficult to follow, but the author definitely thinks “outside the box!
